'Stay Hungry Stay foolish' (the Commencement address by Steve Jobs)

 

 

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.
내가 어릴 때, “지구 대 백과사전(The Whole Earth Catalog)”이라는 아주 놀라운 출판물이 있었습니다. 제 세대 사람들에게는 필독서였지요.

 

It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.

 그 책은 스튜워트 브랜드 이라는 이름을 가진 사람이 쓴 것으로 그 작가는 이곳 멘로 파크에서 멀리 떨어져 있지 않은 곳에 살아요. 그는 시적 감성으로 그 책에 숨결을 불어 넣었지요.

 This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

그때가 1960년 말쯤으로 개인 컴퓨터나 전자출판이 나오기 이전이었죠. 그래서 그 책은 전부 타자기와 가위 그리고 폴라로이드 카메라로 만들었어요. 말하자면 그것은 종이로 만든 구글 같은 것이었죠. 구글이 나오기 35년 전에 말이죠. 그 책은 이상적이고 깔끔한 표지(이때 tool은 표지무늬의 일종)와 훌륭한 생각으로 가득 차 있었어요.

 

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.
스튜워트와 그의 팀은 여러 편의 ‘지구 대 백과사전’을 내놓았고 그러고 나서 그 시리즈가 수명이 다하자 마지막 부수를 내놓았죠. 그때가 1970년 중반이었으니까 내가 꼭 여러분들 나이 때였어요.  

 

On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.
그 마지막 부수의 뒷장 표지에는 새벽 시골길이 찍힌 사진이 있었는데 만약 여러분이 모험을 좋아하여서 히치하이킹을 해보았다면 보암직한 풍경이에요. 

 

Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off.
그 사진 밑에 이러한 격언이 써 있었어요. “끝없이 배고파하고, 끝없이 배워라” 그것은 그들이 마지막 편을 내놓으며 건네는 작별인사였죠.

 

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
끝없이 배고파하고 끝없이 배워라. 전 항상 이 격언을 저 자신에게 되새기곤 합니다. 여러분들은 졸업을 하고 새로운 시작을 하게 됩니다. 전 이 격언을 여러분들이 되새기길 바랍니다.  

 

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
